KARL MOONEY’S PROFILE

My name is Karl Malachy Mooney. I live and work in Rush, in North County Dublin. I have been a graphic designer for over 20 years. Encourage by some colleagues in Colaiste Dhulaigh I decided to study Fine Art in TU Dublin in 2023.

My work to date is a meandering excursion around memory, archetypes, myths and popular culture. I am particularly interested in the ‘event’ and the re-counting of that event – what gets lost, added or twisted in the recounting. My work also questions memories relationship to time and the idea of a constant linear forward motion, memory, for me anyway, doesnt work like that. Can we build events now in video on canvas ect which we will be real at some future time.

I do believe that the bend in my bow is indeed for gladness and my hope is that my work will be of some benefit to mankind.

My influences are Carl Jung, R. D. Laing, Alice Neal, Eva Hesse, Hélio Oiticica, Lydia Clark, Mike Kelly, Richard Prince, Oisin Kelly, Maurizio Cattalan and more lately Rick Owens, amongst others.

I work in mixed media, clay, paint, cardboard and readymade objects.

You can read more about my current thought processes here.

Generally speaking my process is as follows…

The solution is a line…

To one side of the line is the banal, the under cooked.

On the other side is the bad taste and boorish.

As I work I am constantly pushing and pulling towards the heat of the line.

On the line is where you want to be and will be… exalted.

Godspeed.

KMM Dublin June 2025.
