WHYS AND WHEREFORES
At the moment I am interested in memory, juxaposition, playing with timelines, characters, ready-mades and recognisable objects. Sometimes I am trying to find links between stories that are centuries apart. The Anubis and Little Red Riding Hood pinhole camera photo (below), or suggesting semioticall that Snoop Dog is the wolf in the same fairy tale.
I think these images make ‘sense’ in some way, the mechanisms at work, are strange however people can relate to them. How can an Egyptian deity ‘fit’ into 17th century french folklore? By working visually with well know or familiar things, I hope to better understand Jung’s theory of the Archetype. Its interesting that we have a language which we all unconsciously share. I would like my work to explore the language of archetypes and investigate how images or moving pictures can be used to address ‘relevant’ topics unconciously. Can you see what I see?
This avenue of approach is very rich in possibilities and is a mechanism to build new storylines, remake the stories which resonate with people and hopefully provoke them to rethink established narratives.
I also think about Kazimir Malevich and his work about flying and aerial photography. I wonder how he would feel about September 11th for example. I like to explore this light/dark nature of objects – planes as liberators or as weapons. Embuing a plane with human characteristics or animal traits augment our ways of thinking and expands our ways of interpreting their impact on humanity. I guess. Something like that, maybe.
